Lesson 7

TTA came to give us a presentation on set and costume, for the whole cast to review all the costumes and get a sense of what we would be wearing and needing to buy for ourselves. By looking at the set we got an idea of how during rehearsals the space we will e working in and how we would position the blocks for it to look similar to the set. we took a brief moment where we went to speak to costume and the set creators to get all of our questions answered if they hadn't already.

In rehearsal we spent a lot of time focusing on the storm scene and the scenes after. when working with the storm scene, all of the senses and qualities were required to use plastic bag(s) to represent the storm. We started from 1 and worked up the scale, where we are slowing moving the plastic bag and moving it around us in an interesting way around the space to 10 where we went crazy with the bags and began throwing them up and swishing them up and down and showing the aggression of the storm through the bag. i found this really interesting to use plastic bags to create a storm, also the sound of them added to the atmosphere. All of the Everymen were added to this scene and were given different objectives; to run, to fight, to hide, to protect and to watch, running this scene with them included, you could see a positive progression to the scene it looked very effective and wild as there was always something to look at on stage, everyone was always doing something and their objectives echoed clearly. Within the scene reporters say lines and by this point the storm stops and begins again when the reporters says their last lines, eventually at the end of the track Ben played, the storm stopped and all of us drop to the ground and 'die'.When coming back from lunch, Ben explained to us that we were about to do an exercise that is called the Japanese Butoh hand in cling film technique which we were then expected to break our hand out of, we then repeated this exercise but without cling film. by the end of this exercise we discussed how we felt towards that, i felt that by having the cling film on and by staring at my hand while it breaks out, i could really see the force of my fingers trying to tear through and how my hand adjusts after it does, trying to recreate it without using cling film was a challenge as there is no pressure being applied on your hand so putting your mindset into thinking your hand was in cling film again and breaking through helped because i was able to analyse how my hand moved and created different positions when breaking through. Ben then wanted us to repeat the exercise but by now using our whole body while we are on the floor to represent us trying to survive after the storm and trying to move ourselves but very stiffly and in different positions, while this was being created Robyn would then sing over this, we ran through this a couple times until it looked to a good level. We continued by fixing the transitions between fellowship and family
then between family and goods. We went over the rapping scene and made sure it was up to a good standard and ended the lesson by going through physical theatre scenes created by fellowship and everyman and knowledge and everyman.
